Connotations Photo Exercise

Fear - This photo represents fear. Lighting (or lack there of) has been used to convey this even more, as the shadows hide a lot of what is being photographed. What is not seen is part of what is scary about this image, as the viewer of the photo is made to wonder what is hiding in the darkness. The angle used in this image is a 'canted/dutch angle', creating a slightly disorientating look to it, and is also a 'Point-of-view' shot.

Loneliness - This image is supposed to reflect loneliness. The photo is taken as a Wide shot, with the subject of the image far away from the camera looking away from it, close to the centre of the frame. The wide shot is done to show how alone the subject is, with no one nearby, as they are in deep thought and emotion looking where they are. Also, the angle used is a straight on one, almost to signify  the viewer of the photo meant to feel bad for the person

Friendship - This image represents friendship. It has been taken at a Bird's Eye View angle above the subjects of the photo. The two rabbits are seen being really close to each other, surrounded by bright colours to convey a positive mood to the photo. The brown rabbit almost looks as if it is taking care of the white one also. The shot distance used is another Point-of-view shot.

Purity - This image represents purity. It is an 'extreme close up' shot of a dog's eye, subject being a dog as a young child or a pet are often perceived as very pure things. It has been taken close up to show the details in the animal's eye, and how innocent they look into the lens. It has also been taken at a slightly high angle, which could be seen as signifying how 'weak' the subject may be, again reflecting the idea of their purity.

Greed - This image has been taken to reflect greed. The subject seen at an eye-level, wearing a suit and completely surrounded by a green background, a colour which is often associated with money and wealth. The 'extreme close-up' of them makes their details, such as the stern look in their eye, more clear, like they are planning on something or are very determined to achieve something - that thing being more wealth as implied by their clothing choice.

Wealth - This image reflects wealth. The main subject of this image is the money, which has been well lit as to amplify its details and focused on even more with an 'extreme close up' shot type. The fact that this is the only thing clearly visible in the frame has been done to show that the money is what really matters in this image and that it is extremely important - nothing else. The photo has also been taken at a slightly low angle, implying the power of the wealth shown in the frame as well.

Love - This image signifies love. Something to note about this photo are the colours - most of the image is taken in a black and white theme, while the phone screen with the message from the owner's loved one appearing on it is the only part of the image in full colour, implying the strength of love and how it can metaphorically 'bring light to somewhere full of darkness' (aka make someone extremely happy when they were once not at all). The image is taken as a point of view shot at a high angle, looking down at the phone in a subtle, caring manner, reflecting how much the owner of the phone loves the person who has sent the message seen.

Poverty - This image is supposed to signify poverty. It has been taken as a point-of-view shot, looking down at the empty wallet which is being held in the centre of the frame. The lack of colour in the image is a reflection of the emotion the wallet's owner is made to feel due to its emptiness. This is amplified even more by the fact that the image has been taken as an extreme close up, with the focus being solely on the emptiness of the wallet, an item which has the sole intent of being filled with money.

Danger -- This image could represent danger in terms of as a connotation. The subject of the photo is the only thing in frame, surrounded by nothing total darkness, almost as if they are isolated in total nothingness. The light shining on her face brings across a slight creepy atmosphere to the photograph. The camera is on the same level as the subject, using a 'low' angle and a 'close-up' shot type. The way the lighting casts a shadow on a lot of her face keeps her surrounded in mystery, leaving the viewer of the photo uncertain of who they are, their emotions, etc, possibly making them a bit apprehensive (or fearful) of the individual, whoever they are

Strength -- This photograph symbolises strength, as it takes inspiration from the phrase 'knowledge is power'. The photo has been taken as an eye-level/straight on angle and a shot type of a medium shot, with the subject completely surrounded by books, representing knowledge and the utmost strength it possesses over everything. She is looking straight down the camera lens also, showing her confidence as how she does not shy away from it and is not scared to confront the camera/photographer.

Desire -- This image could be seen as representing either Desire. The owner of the items in the photo has decorated their phone and possessions with them totally, showing how much desire they have for the subject in question that they want to see them as much as they can. They keep the photos on them constantly because of how much they desire to have the person in question, if only. The photo uses a Point-of-view shot along with a birds eye view angle, looking down on the subject almost as if in a caring/lusting manner from the eyes of the possession's owner.

Weakness - This image has been taken to show weakness. The subject of the photo is a man in distress, clearly in tears for some reason. The fact that the subject is male is important, as it is meant to be taking advantage of the stereotype that if a man cries or shows emotion, he is instantly a weak person. The extreme close up is done to focus exclusively on the emotion in the subject's face and eyes, and is at a slightly higher angle to imply even more weakness.
